Mia’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Mia's Chocolate Chip Cookies

A couple weeks ago, Deidox Films came to our house to film a short documentary on The Turquoise Table for a city-wide initiative called The Art of Neighboring. . . Love Where You Live. Brent and Dave spent two days following me and the family around in the kitchen, carpool, and of course in the front yard at the turquoise table. When they asked if they could get footage of me cooking something,  I immediately knew I should make Mia’s famous Chocolate Chip Cookies.

These cookies have been a staple in Mia’s cookie jar since the mid 1970s. When you taste them you’ll know why.

I saw a rough cut of the documentary and sadly the footage of me pulling hot, melty chocolate chip cookies straight from the oven didn’t make the final cut. Which makes me wonder if the guys were just hungry?

The documentary will be shown for the first time on February 3rd at the Leadership Rally for The Art of Neighboring event. I’m in awe of how God continues to use this ordinary picnic table for extraordinary purpose! Registration is already over 1200 people on Tuesday — 1200 folks will hear the story and hopefully be encouraged to be Front Yard People, too. Can you imagine how cities and communities will change if we all take the initiative to get to know our neighbors in meaningful ways?

I’ll post the link to the documentary as soon as I have permission to share. Since the cookies didn’t make the cut, I’m sharing Mia’s Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe with you. It would be a shame not to have this recipe for your next gathering.

These chewy delicious chocolate chip cookies have been a staple in my mother’s {Mia} cookie jar since the 1970s. The original recipe came from a family friend’s housekeeper. Her name was Ada and she made cookies for all the babies she took care of. The original recipe is titled Ada’s Babies Cookies.

  • Author: inspired by Ada

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter (11 TBS = 1 stick butter + 3 TBS)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cups nuts (I omit at kid’s request)

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes.

Meet Kristin

Welcome! I'm so glad you're here.

I'm on a mission to love my neighbors. I put an ordinary picnic table in my front yard, painted it turquoise and invited neighbors, friends, and even strangers to hang out and do life together at the Turquoise Table®.

I hope you'll join us!
