In today’s episode of The Turquoise Table, host Kristin Schell interviews Jessica Honegger about the joy that comes when you are cornered by courage and choose to gather women for a purpose. Jessica is a wife, mother of three, founder and CEO of Noonday Collection, and bestselling author of Imperfect Courage: Live a Life of Purpose by Leaving Comfort and Going Scared. Noonday Collection was created after Jessica adopted her son Jack from Rwanda. Noonday creates meaningful opportunities in fashion for vulnerable communities to sell their beautiful handmade goods and empower them to flourish. Ambassadors of Noonday Collection are women in America that host trunk shows to create economic opportunity for the artisans and themselves.
Show Notes
Jessica shares how lonely she felt as a young mother and how the recession was impacting her business as an interior designer and house flipper. She began reaching out to her neighbors and friends, selling jewelry and clothing to bring in more income. At the same time, she’d already started the adoption process for Jack. The pressure was on to make sure the family could afford to support their new son.
Jessica describes just how paralyzed she felt by fear. She began to wonder if she should call off the sale, because people might not show up to support her. But people did show up and Jessica saw it through. This was the beginning of her journey out of loneliness and into community. As she built her now thriving business, Jessica’s loneliness was truly alleviated and community and courage became inescapable.
Jessica is not afraid to push for vulnerability in order to create a space to hold the hard things. She also embodies that push in her own life, asking for help from neighbors as her home was being remodeled and inviting herself over for dinner at other people’s homes.
Both Kristin and Jessica describe how hard it is to ask for help and community. But once you do, it becomes easier. Noonday Collection is built on a model of relying on one another to open homes, host parties for ambassadors, and change the world. Kristin and Jessica also describe how hospitality, though a dangerous way to live, has remarkable rewards.
