31 Days: Extending the Table: A World Community Cookbook

Dorsey Museum Rocking Chairs WM

It’s early Saturday morning. I woke up around 5:00 am, tried to read a little bit and then promptly fell back to sleep. It felt good. Clearly, I’m tired.

Last night was the first Friday night since May that our entire family of six were all in town and at home. No traveling, no sleepovers, no football game, no nothing. This honest admission is telling. . . I’ll tell you more, and how it relates to outrageous hospitality, but not today.

Today, I’m unplugging. Chillin’ with the family. I’m sure I’ll putz around in the kitchen, maybe stroll through the Farmer’s Market, and I might even take a nap which I haven’t done since I was approximately two years old. Outrageous!

On Saturdays, during our month together for 31 Days of Outrageous Hospitality, I’ll share a favorite book that offers inspiration and instruction on the gift of hospitality.

I’ll start with one of my favorite cookbooks ~

Extending the Table Cookbook

From the forward of Extending the Table:

Extending the Table is an invitation…to enjoy the gifts of people from Argentina and Bangladesh to Yugoslavia and Zambia. The stories and recipes help us enter into the lives and situations of these people and to be changed by them in significant ways. Food is a medium of communication, but it is more; in a mysterious way, it is part of the message, as Jesus so vividly portrayed in the breaking of bread and distribution of the cup.

The forward goes on to tell the story of how missionaries traveling in Argentina asked a local church leader how they, the missionaries, might best begin to share the gospel with the indigenous people who do not have churches to go to. The local pastor’s response?

“I would go and eat their food.”

Sharing food, breaking bread together in community, is perhaps the most ordinary way we can be extraordinary in offering Outrageous Hospitality.

Enjoy your Saturday and I hope you like Extending the Table as much as I do.

A little bit more housekeeping. First, I was supposed to link up my 31 Days series with The Nester, which I completely forgot to do. Doh. Second, I’m working on a landing page to keep track of each post so they will be easier for you to find and read. Hopefully, I’ll have that ready on Monday.

In the meantime, here’s a list of the posts so far in 31 Days of Outrageous Hospitality:

Introduction – Mountain Strong: When Your Thing is Outrageous Hospitality

Day 1: What Does Outrageous Hospitality Mean to You?

Day 2: Who Inspires You to Offer Outrageous Hospitality?

Day 3: Outrageous Hospitality Begins at Home

Day 4: When It’s Your Turn to Receive Outrageous Hospitality

Glad you have a free weekend and are nestling into it.

Meet Kristin

Welcome! I'm so glad you're here.

I'm on a mission to love my neighbors. I put an ordinary picnic table in my front yard, painted it turquoise and invited neighbors, friends, and even strangers to hang out and do life together at the Turquoise Table®.

I hope you'll join us!
