Grilling is synonymous with Father’s Day and we are grilling it up Big Time this weekend to celebrate.
I bought Husband a Big Green Egg for Father’s Day this year and for the love of the grill I can’t believe we waited so long. We’ve been eggsperimenting all weekend. I sure hope y’all like to grill because I’ve got some winner recipes coming up. You don’t need a Big Green Egg for the recipes, of course, but if you were already considering one, I have three words for you. . . GO FOR IT!
Husband woke up in the wee hours of the morning to get the pork going for today’s long & slow smoke fest. If all goes well we’ll be celebrating with pulled pork sandwiches for supper.
I bought a 5 lb bone-in pork shoulder. Pork shoulder is the same as a Boston butt, but I have a problem calling the cut butt when it comes from the shoulder. Plus, if I told the Littles we were eating pork butt? Well, you can imagine the endless sophomoric jokes.
Yesterday, we smothered the pork in the most delicious dry rub and left it in the fridge overnight for all the flavors to absorb. This rub is absolutely to die for! But, please don’t. I adapted it ever so slightly from the Big Green Egg website where you can check out the full pulled pork recipe we are testing. I doubled the dry rub recipe and made some for my father. Popa is headed to the lake house later today, but not before I give him his own jar of Big Time BBQ Dry Rub and a huge hug.
Big Time BBQ Dry Rub would be perfect on just about anything you choose to grill. Make up a batch and keep it handy for your summer grilling. And, if you still need a little something for the special dad in your life this dry rub makes a great Father’s Day gift.
I’m actually doing a little live-blogging today. Husband just checked the pork-in-progress and I snapped this photo. Look at how gorgeous this rub is in action. The pork is about six hours into the smoke fest at this point. Just a couple more hours!
Here’s a grill inspired menu for Father’s Day or any summer Sunday supper.
